Center of Mirror Lake #2

Center of Mirror Lake #2
2006-10-29-Yosemite_MG_6316

This is another from the middle of Mirror Lake during our Halloween. No one was around but there were two really large ravens strutting around outin the middle of the creek bed. Mirror Lake is a shadow of its former self and is a widening in Tenaya creek.

This is another from Sunol on the afternoon as yesterday’s post.

This is one for my upcoming Repetition with Color assignment due Thursday. I went out with Chip to Sunol. It was late afternoon and overcast. The light cast no shadow but everything was lit with a beautiful soft glow. These leaves were floating in the creek. I took a lot of handheld shots but most were slightly soft.

Happy Thanksgiving.

This is another taken in Yosemite around Halloween and is a high dynamic range image.

Yosemite in Fall #9

This is another taken during our Halloween visit to Yosemite. This is the trail leading to Mirror Lake. I like this photo a lot but it was not well reviewed at my portfolio class. Maybe, I like this image just because it was such a beautiful day and this photo brings back that memory.

Yosemite in Fall #8

Yosemite in Fall #8

This is another image taken along the Mirror Lake Trail. This shot shows some of the granite in the valley. The valley is carved out of granite by the Merced River and glacier action.

Another from my lunchtime drive-by taken almost two weeks ago. Chip is due back in town and I have to go out and fill in more of my portfolio.

Here is a write-up of my digital printing process. Later, I may add a second document later for B&W printing. Click here, DigitalPrinting.PDF.

This image is a drive-by of back list Pampas grass.

This is the bike trail/road side of Tenaya Creek. These bikes are seen all over the Yosemite valley floor because they are rentals.

This was the only water that Chip and I saw in Tenaya Creek during our Halloween visit. I was all charged up for some reflections and water shots. As yesterday’s image shows, there was not a drop of water in mirror lake.

Yosemite in Fall #5

This one was taken on the trail to Mirror Lake. I think the orange leaves are dogwood.

Center of Mirror Lake

This is from the middle of Mirror Lake in Yosemite. Mirror Lake was never a lake but a wide pool along Tenaya Creek. It is now mostly filled with silt. It also was bone dry during our Halloween visit. I could not resist a shot from the center. You can see how rushing rapids in the spring time have carved this boulder.

Daylight Savings Time #2

Daylight Savings Time #2

This is another from my walk home. With Daylight Savings Time, it is pitch dark before 6PM.

Tonite, I was walking to my car from the train around 6PM. With daylight savings time, it was now pitch dark. Given there is no parking, I have to walk about 1/2 mile to the overflow parking lot wheeling my briefcase with laptop behind me. I also am feeling pressured because I am taking a photo class and need to turn in (5) images showing repetition. So, I haul out my camera to try for some images (hand-held). Of course, it starts to pour. This is the edge of the parking lot with my car and it had been pouring for a while. I was drenched. So, I took this shot. I had my little 50mm lens opened at f/3.2 and ISO 3200. Given I was using one hand and trying to shield the lens, I ripped off 4 images in a row. This was the sharpest but does not really show the sheets of rain pouring down on me.

Another slightly different version of the backlit oaks in Cook’s Meadow.

Today, I visited Aphra’s house. When we looked at this image on the screen, it looked too dark. So, I came home and re-processed it to be lighter. I guess it is time to re-calibrate the monitor.

Lunchtime Drive-by

2006-11-08-Drive-by_MG_6512

Based on my portfolio class last nite, I decided to go with a drive-by portfolio. Now, the drive-bys are not as popular as the traditional landscapes with the group, but I realized I do want to do the drive-by portfolio. So today, I was working at home and Chip is home in time for us to eat lunch together. I talked him into driving me down to Santa Clara just so I can photograph for my portfolio. What an odd twist. "No, Chip do not slow down -- I need to take a shot!"

Pohono Bridge #2

Pohono Bridge #2
2006-10-28-Yosemite_MG_5890

Last nite, I brought work prints of all my Yosemite images (at least those processed). For an 8 minute window, we passed the prints around the room. I just asked for checks on images that folks liked. The results were very interesting. This one almost everyone liked. The Drive-By series was not as popular as my classic landscapes but I think I may make a portfolio out of them anyway. Later, I found of the subset of folks who liked them that they invoked a strong reaction.

This image may represent the most processing that I have ever done. It is an panoramic HDR with 5 vertical slices. Each slice is 7 bracketed exposures. I tried processing twice with errors. The third time was the charm.

This one shows the intense yellow foliage in the Yosemite valley. This caused havoc with my white balance and there are several images that have very cyan stones. At this point, I am not sure how to color correct these images. So, they may end up posted in black and white instead.

Mirror Lake Trail

This one was taken while hiking the Mirror Lake trail along Tenaya Creek. I had planned to take water shots of the creek but the water was totally gone at this time of year.

Today, I had a request for a Yosemite image other than the Drive-By series. So here are backlighted oaks in Cooks Meadow. I did bracket and use HDR image to hold details in the glowing leaves and foreground.
