Niles Canyon

Today, Mother, Chip and I went out to Sunol. We took the scenic route through Niles Canyon so that I could shoot more drive-bys for my portfolio. This one is probably my least detailed but I like the hopeful mood.

This is another series that was an assignment for my Color Composition class. This assignment was to produce 5 abstract images from one object. I forgot to take an establishing shot. See here for the entire object.

This is another for the Urban Woods series. Hope everyone had a good Christmas. I have a funny story from my girlfriend. This year, she gave into Christmas tree-itis and put up two trees. Her little boy is 4 years old. Early on Christmas morning, her little boy ran in and woke them up. He says "I have good news and bad news.". Dad says "What is that?". The little boy says "Well, Santa came but he only delivered to one tree."

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
This is a stitched composite of about 12 images from my Krappy Kamera.

This is the fifth and last image from my color class assignment of 5 images dominated by a single hue. I selected red. This was taken with my $10 Krappy Kamera and taken in the supermarket. This was selected as my Christmas card for this year.

This is the second image from my color class assignment of 5 images dominated by a single hue. I selected red. This is the curb at the train station flipped upside-down.

This is the start of another homework assignment for my color composition class. The assignment was 5 images dominated by a single hue. I selected red.

This is the last image of the assignment. As you can tell, my choice was a row of grocery carts. As I was shooting this series, I was bending over the carts and wiggling around for a vantage point. When I finished, I went back to the car to review the images. I was hunched over my camera trying to shield it from outdoor light to see the LCD. All of a sudden, a lady taps on my window. She asks "Are you ok?" She was concerned that I was ill and needed assistance. I forget how weird my photographic behavior must look to the uninitiated.

This series is almost done. You may recognize the object from this image.

This viewpoint provides a little more information about the mystery object. Tomorrow’s image may give it away. Otherwise, the fifth image in the sequence will give away the object.

This is the second image from my assignment of one object shot from 5 different viewpoints. I have sequenced to move from very abstract to recognizable.

This next series of 5 images is our assignment for shooting one object from 5 different viewpoints. I promise that you will know what the object is at the end of the series.

This is the Union City bus stop. I did make an HDR image to try to hold some of the highlight detail. The starburst effects is very unexpected and I guess a side-effect of my fisheye lens. This one is my least favorite of the mood series. However, I find the nite photography idea intriguing.

I read about the keychain mini digital camera sold at Walgreens for $10 on The Online Photographer. So, I just had to get one. Chip and I stopped at Walgreens after I took the Palm Reader image from yesterday’s post. They only had one camera. Today, I filled its 16 MB of memory with 20 shots. This is the only usable one although I do have a lot of accidental self-portraits because I did not realize there is a really long shutter delay. I would press the shutter (or SNAP button based on the manual). I could not hear the beep and would look to see if the image counter on the front had moved down. Therefore getting a shot looking up my nose.

This is another in my "Mysterious/Surreal" assignment. I went out last nite and took this from our neighborhood. I dragged Chip along who was extremely reluctant. Chip refused to get out of the car and missed out on my little light painting show.

This is a light painting for "Mood". I used a borrowed flashlight to add the eerie feeling. I do not know why these hands were spray painted on the highway sound wall.

Like yesterday’s image, this is another of my "Mysterious or Surreal" assignment.

This one was taken in the parking garage when finishing our field trip to the Embarcadero Center on Saturday. This is part of my "Mysterious or Surreal Mood" assignment.
I helped the lighting along in Photoshop by quite a bit. I wanted to put more light on the mirror and let the rest flow into mysterious darkness (at least I hope that is how it appears). To achieve this effect, make sure that your image is 8-bit color because the Lighting filter does not yet work wiht 16-bit color. Add a blank layer. Make this layer’s blending mode be Soft Light or Overlay. Fill the layer with neutral grey (RGB 128, 128, 128). Now, run the Filter | Rendering | Lighting filter. From there, you have a lot of light choices, I usually stick with Flashlight or Omni. For this one, I was more adventurous and put in Five Lights Down. Since the lighting is on a grey layer. I could blur the edges and fine-tune the effects without losing image detail.

Another from my Color class’ field trip to the Embarcadero.

This is taken from a rooftop plaza where we exited the parking garage. Since I work in this area, I see these reflected dappled light patterns a lot. This is the first time that I have photographed the effect. I did exposure bracketig and combined the images into a high-dynamic range image to control the contrast.

Rather than continuing my color class assignment photos, I am switching to photos from our Embarcadero field trip. Embarcardero street runs along the waterfront and is a pedestrian walkway. We were near the Ferry building which is recently renovated and hosts a world-class farmer’s market. Across the street is a wonderful art fair. It is a great area for a weekend morning or afternoon.
This shot was taken when returning to the parking garage.

This is another assignment image for my color class. This assignment was to show repetition with variation and interesting color. In school, I was always prepared for my assignments and was not a person who like the last minute all night cramming. However for the color class, my assignment was not ready. So as I walked from the train to my car, I was scanning the sidewalk for images. This is part of that series. I have several more images from that walk that I intend to post.
Oh, I did not place the leaf. Its placement is what attracted me to the image. I am not good at making these little vignettes.

This one was taken for my color class assignment. We needed to make interesting compositions with color showing repetition. The repetition should have variation. I think my recent drive-by work has affected me because I saw this loading dock door and drove up. Took the image from my car. Hmmm... I need to do a few landscapes again to reset myself.

This is one of the drive-by series taken last weekend. I have been out a few more times with Chip driving. I like this one but so far it does not fit in the portfolio. I still have not really understood the process of sequencing but am working on it. Eventually, I will post a link to the full portfolio.
