Bodie

Bodie
2007-04-29-Sunol-9276

One last shot of Bodie from his first walk. He was found hiding in a garage and pilfering cat food. He had been attacked by another dog (?) and had wounds on his neck and face. He is fully recovered but still very nervous about other dogs and reacts by getting aggressive. Hopefully, he will relax after he gets used to us and stop this behavior.

Maizy Update

Maizy Update
2007-04-29-Sunol-9248

With the arrival of Bodie, Maizy has ascended her throne of queenliness. She has decided that she is the boss and must supervise everything that Bodie does. Lately, Maizy has not been interested in Chip or I. Even when we try to cuddle Maizy, her head is cocked and her eyes are tracking Bodie. Even when she is really mean to Bodie, she will follow up her behavior by kissing his face and ears.

More Bodie

More Bodie
2007-04-29-Sunol-9245

This is another shot of Bodie. I liked his expression here even though there is an unfortunate blade of grass and not a great angle for Bodie. Somehow, Bodie has a Golden Lab’s feet, head and tail but only beagle-size legs and body. However, Bodie is a great little hunter.

Meet Bodie (aka Bates)

Meet Bodie (aka Bates)
2007-04-29-Sunol-9240

Meet our new family member. His name is Bodie (originally Bates). We have classified him as a Beagle-Golden Labrador or Beaglador. He is very sweet and loves to cuddle. Maizy bullies him mercilessly but he puts up with her very, very patiently. This is his first walk and he was too excited to barely look at me.

Magic Tree Revisited

Magic Tree Revisited
2007-04-25-Sunol-8633

Last nite, I visited Sunol again and visited the magic tree. I have tried many times to make an image of this wonderful tree. Of all my attempts, this is the best image so far. It is an infrared image shot at ISO 800 -- so, it is a little grainy. However, I multiple processed the RAW file into a high-dynamic range image. This softened the highlights so they are not too ’glary’. Next, I lightened the shadows 3x on the tree trunk to balance the tonality. Finally, I downloaded a trial of the Photokit plugin for its B&W effects filter. I used a Platinum toning at 60% for the warm tone.

Photographic Style #3

Photographic Style #3

This is the third and final photographic style for my class assignment. I hope that you agree this is abstract/impressionistic.

For a beautiful reflection shot, see here.

Photographic Style #2

Photographic Style #2
2007-04-25-Sunol-8664P_2pin

Yesterday’s post shows one photographic style (ie a photo montage). For my Photographic style class, I need an example of three different styles for my infrared landscapes. This is my second photographic style, and is a simulated pinhole camera shot that I mimicked in Photoshop. I tried shallow depth of field with my infrared camera but I have not mastered the focus differences to have my shot turn out.

I toned this shot with Ken Lee’s Bronze Quadtones. See http://www.kenleegallery.com/bronze.htm.

Sacramento Train Museum Abstract #4

Sacramento Train Museum Abstract #4
2007-01-21-Sacramento_8416

Ooops, found one more abstract from the Sacramento Train Museum’s ceiling.

I recently discovered Lenswork podcasts called "Vision of the Heart". Brooks Jensen discusses an image (or pair of images) published in Lenswork. His discussions are very insightful and revealing. For me, hearing these discussions gives me a much greater appreciation of the work. For the podcasts, see here.

By listening to the podcasts, I discovered the amazing and gorgeous work of Chip Forelli. His B&W work is gorgeous. In the podcast, he quotes his mentor, "Never trust air that you cannot see." In Chip’s work, the air is a vital component of the composition and mood.

Given my lack of new images, I dug into the archives and pulled out a drive-by. This is the Pleasanton BART (train) station taken from the car. This station is between the east and west bound traffic on Highway 680.

Sunol #1

Today, I finally made it out for a few new shots. It rained earlier in the day and the light ws beautiful. I snuck out with Maizy and left Chip at home with our new dog, Bates. He is a mix and looks like a beagle with hair and tail of a Golden Lab. To top off the day, I saw a bobcat wondering around as I was loading my camera gear into the car. Some pictures of Bates are to follow.

Sorry for the long break in posting. At first, I was busy teaching the workshop and then, I have been sick all week. I am now up and mobile but not quite back to normal. Today, Aphra and I went out to the Tulip Show at the Mountain View Cemetary in Oakland. The show was held in a small chapel with displays by florists, gardening groups, etc. Very lovely!
