I am still experimenting with Painter. This process is reallly leaving the look of a gum bichromate print. I changed my approach to keep the painted layers brighter and this resulted in a lot more color.

I had a class all week at Fort Mason. There were a lot of art student running around with their portfolios. There are art classes for City College held at Fort Mason. Here is one of the studio doors with the artist handprints.

This is the kitchen window of Greens Restaurant. I have taken a shot of this window before but I really like this window. I decided to leave the lady on the cell phone in the image.

Digital Gum Bichromate

I have started a year-long workshop with Ted Orland and David Bayles. Wow! I am very excited and little nervous to get started. We had our first meeting yesterday. I proposed my project as a portfolio of small intimate B&W landscapes from Sunol Regional Park. While at our meeting, I decided with gulp that I would do a book. Well, consider this image my leaping off point. I wanted to colorize my images ala Brian Taylor’s work with gum bichromate. After looking at how gum bichromate processing works, that is not for me. Way too fussy and hands on.
So, I set out to invent my own version using Photoshop and Corel Painter. This is my second piece (the first is not public). I started with charcoal sketches in Corel Painter. Those sketches were tinted with gold, green and blue. I then blended the tinted images in Photoshop using the Multiply blending mode. The Multiply blending mode simulates multiple exposures in camera. Then, I did tonal adjustments and color tweaks in Photoshop. The image was not working for me. So, I added solarized coloring.

Tonite, I went out to Maguire Creek Road. This road is very twisty, windy and narrow that runs along the edge for Sunol Regional Park. I started to hike up the hill but I was swarmed by flies.

This one is a bit of a mystery. I think we were pulling into a parking space at my favorite restaurant, Yan Can. I started with a red building with ivy surrounded windows. As we turned, there is a multi-story construction project and then the flowers in front of Yan Can restaurant.

This is another shot from my midday walk around the hotel in Seattle. I like the composition and bokeh areas. I did not like the tonality and colors. So, I fiddled around with the Nik filters until I did.

Up in Seattle, I had a chance to take a short walk around our hotel during the middle of the day. We were staying in a hotel next to the Green River. The banks of the river were covered in brambles of wild roses, black berries and wild morning glories.

I accidentally applied the Nik Colorize filter to this one. I like the pop of oranges that the filter emphasized so I kept it.
