This is my last assignment for my Betterphoto painting class. We were assigned an oil painting. I started with a gouache layer (did not like), covered it with an oil pastel layer, blended, repainted with an oil brush layer, blended again, and added more details. Here is the original.

I have down for a few days. My laptop required major surgery with a new (much bigger) internal hard drive. I am going to pick back up with my Pt Reyes photos. I visited Tomales Bay State Park one afternoon and wandered down to the beach. The shoreline was littered with oyster(?) shells that were very blue. As you can see, the waters are crystal clear.

Here is the second part of my third assignment for my online Corel Painter class. It is an impasto painting. For this one, I painted it once and then re-cloned and painted it again. That ’smeared’ it up where I was happier with the look. Next, I blended the original image with Pin Light. That popped the rain droplets. Finally, I did some fiddling in Photoshop with the colors. Whew! I can go to bed now.

This is a chalk painting. Spent a lot of time trying to balance detail with masses of color.

After slogging back toward my car, I had a plastic bag over my camera trying to keep the rain out. I found the real trail leading through a meadow. So, I figured why not just shoot through the plastic bag? I wanted the stormy feel to translate. Here is the result.

This week, I went away for a few days to Pt Reyes to relax. The first few days involved a lot of napping. Feeling rested, I ventured out for some shooting. As you can see from the shot, there was rain. I was soaked and miserable plus I missed the trail marker and wandered into the horse camp. I did not attempt any photos because everybody looked as unhappy as I felt. I did take this infrared shot of the weeds next to the pasture area. As I was giving up and returning to the car, a few ladies huddled under a canopy said "Are you here to take portraits of miserable people?". Nope, just trying to make art.

I am taking a Corel Painter class from www.betterphoto.com. Our second assignment was to make an impressionistic painting out of a photograph. Here is my original.

This one is a rainy drive-by that has been fiddled with a loss of some colors when converting to the web. It reminds me a bit of Tracy Helgeson’s work. I enjoy her blog regularly.

This is a pastel portrait of Bodie. I made this pastel portrait as part of my online class on using Corel Painter through Better Photo. It took MUCH too long to complete and I had to go into Photoshop to fine-tune the colors. You cannot see on the web but there is purple shadows that are lost by the color conversion to sRGB.

This just shows that the right light can make anything look good.

Since I have not had time to go out hiking. Here is a grab shot taken when heading to the train to go home from work.

This weekend, I attended the David Julian workshop through Digital Stop. I had a great time and all the stars aligned. David is a great teacher, inspiration and working on simulating alternate processes digitally. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend taking one of his workshops on creativity. He really can teach creativity. We also learned compositing skills as shown by this image.
